Chapter Eighteen

Day Eight, La Cotinière

"What are we doing today then" asked Ray.

"You know very well" replied Dona, "unless you have gone and changed you mind again".

"No, I was only kidding, but we do need some shopping, especially some new beers, we will just have a look for somewhere while we are out, or go to Lidl first"

It was almost a week since they had been shopping and they were running a bit low on some things, they could have just jumped to a supermarket anywhere in the world but they didn't really need too. The Lidl just over the bridge on the mainland wasn't too far away and was also very cheep.

"Lidl first I think" said Dona, "then we can just get on with the rest of today".

"Lidl it is then " said Ray.

They had a choice of two places to visit today and as they went shopping first, they chose La Cotinière on the far side of the island.

It was only a short drive and they got parked up there fairly easily on the sea front, behind the fishery. The first thing they did was walk to the end of the pier and along the wall out to sea.  From there they had to walk back around the fishery to get into town.  Passed all of the tourist shops, right round to the opposite side of the harbour where they sat in the sun next to the light there for a while.  It was very pleasant there and they watched several fishing boats come in.  It was quite busy there, especially for such a small port.

As they walked back along the pier towards the shops, they first stopped to watch a boat being lowered into the water.  It was only a small boat but the lift was made for much larger ones, the lift was even bigger than the one they had seen back home.  Next they stopped to watch a group of workmen try to fit a propeller to one of the large fishing boats up on the harbour side.  These boats look a lot bigger out of the water, anyway it didn't go quite that good but they did seem to be getting there as they walked on.

Back at the shops they had a wander round, bought a couple of cans of beer and even went into a jewellers, to buy a pear of earrings, only to be accused of trying to pass forged or fake euro note. Ray grabbed the note back and paid with another older note, which they readily accepted off him, then got out of there as quick as they could, without looking too dodgy.

They were going to stop in the town for a beer but left as soon as they could, Ray did not want to drew any more attention towards them.  They drove on down to Saint-Trojan-les-Bains, with a view of the large bridge leading to the island.  Here they pulled over and parked up, Ray got the twenty euro note out of his wallet and looked at it.

"Its new" said Ray "but it looks ok to me, trouble is we only use euros once or twice a year. We will just have to ask in the bar tonight.  Anyway its getting late, lets have a beer."

They sat outside a bar facing the bridge, the beer unfortunately though was Amstel Biere, not a favourite of either of them but better than nowt, as they say up north.

After the beer they headed back to their apartment for something to eat before their next trip.
