Chapter Twenty-three

Day Nine, The Surveillance Begins

Back in his room Oscar switched on his laptop and checked the cameras in Ray and Dona's place, all was working fine. So he sat and waited for them to get back from their day out, or wherever they had been.  He relaxed with his feet up on the bed and started to read a book he had picked up in the bar, it was one of those charity things. He though it was funny that he was reading, Jumper, the 1992 original science fiction novel by Steven Gould, that the later film was based on.

It was about two hours latter when Ray and Dona came through the gate and entered their apartment.

Oscar was suddenly brought back from his book and started watching, he also adjusted the sound level so could here what the were saying.  Well at the moment they were just discussing their day out and even what they were going to do next.  But at the moment nothing at all about the Artifact, he began to wonder if he was right about it.

He kept watching though but there was nothing at all.  Then the night started to drag, Ray and Dona made supper, had beers and watched some TV.  The TV surprised Oscar, he had not thought that they would have a TV with them, especially one that received British programs and in English.  He had noticed the satellite dish in the garden but had completely ignored it, mow he realised that they had the Sat with them.

He even noticed the beers they were drinking, another thing he had not noticed beforehand, Ray was drinking a De Gayant, Schoenberg and Dona had a Hoegaarden. Not the usual beers he had expected and then Ray opened a Kronenbourg, Tuborg Skøll, which he did not seem to like at all.

"Lets go out for a drink" suggested Ray "this beer is not very nice at all, glad I only got the one."

Oscar noted that he was right on that one.

"I will have to get changed first" said Dona.

"Don't be daft" replied Ray "no one has seen us today.  Just get a wrap in case it gets cool later on"

Oscar though that he knew but also that it didn't matter.

So they got ready and left.

Oscar thought to himself that he had just wasted his time sitting in his room but what would he be doing at home.  Sitting in his room watching screens, oh well, he though, may as well get ready and join them.  What was he on about, get ready, he just switched off the lap top and wandered over to the bar.

Oscar beat them to the bar but he had not got there before Steve and Janet, who where already sat there.  Just as he got sat down Ray and Dona appeared around the corner and joined them.  Soon they were all talking about their days and even Oscar mentioned his trip to Bourcefranc-le-Chapus and Fort Louvois. Although he did mention that he had been working on the morning.  It was definitely easer to talk to them now he had had a few days with them.

Steve and Janet said that they were glad every one had shown up tonight, as it was their last nigh and they were off home tomorrow.

"That's sad" said Dona "we have only just got to meet up and be friends.  Well we had best make the most of tonight, who wants another drink"

Steve only had an small beer (he had to drive tomorrow) but Janet had another glass of wine, as did Oscar and Dona but Ray had a large glass of beer.  A Meteor, Lager, it was better than the Tuborg Skøll and he had been drinking it most of the time they had been here.

The night went on until the bar closed, Steve had done really well and was quite sober but the others had made the best of it and were well on the way to being drunk.  They all said goodnight and goodbye to Steve and Janet, Ray and Dona wished them a safe drive home and said it would be nice to see them again sometime.  They then swapped phone numbers and emails before going their separate ways.

When Oscar got back to his room he switch on the laptop and waited for Ray and Dona to arrive back at there place.

When they arrived back Oscar was staggered that Ray actually had another beer as soon as they got in.  Although Dona went straight to bed, while Ray typed something into his laptop, this only went on for about ten mins, then Ray went to bed.

Oscar switched off this laptop and also went to bed, he would have wondered what to do next but he didn't, he went straight to sleep.
