Chapter Twenty-six

Day Eleven, Rome

Oscar, stood in silence, staring at the screen, he didn't know what he expected, he didn't even know that he was actually going to discover anything. But this was amazing, they had actually disappeared, in a flash.  They had gone.

Had he recorded it, was all the apparatus working properly.  He quickly checked, and then watched it over and over again. They really had disappeared, they had really gone but too where he did not know, yet.

He set up all of the department's gear to search for them, together with any new reports on bright flashes.  He had the digitised photos of Ray and Dona searched for everywhere and hopefully the filters could sort it all out for him.

He thought he would wait before he contacted Teddy Bradshaw, he really needed to know a lot more before that.  For now he continued with the search.

----------

Outside the Piazza di S. Anastasia, in Rome, stood Ray and Dona, this was the place Ray had picked out as being safe and it was. Not a sole in the area, although there were a few people and cars passing on the road at the end of the courtyard.

Rome was great, thought Ray, as they made there way along the river Tiber passed Isola Tiberina, then through the centre towards the Piazza Navona. Thay walked past Largo di Torre Argentina, where Julius Caesar was killed on the steps of Theatre of Pompey, or something like that. The Piazza Navona is built on the site of the Stadium of Domitian and is in the shape of the Circus but well built up over the centuries.  In the centre was the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (or Fountain of the Four Rivers), where Ray and Dona had a nice sit and rest in the late sun.

It was now time for that beer and knowing Italian beer prising (well in the cafes around well known places anyway), they made their way away from the Piazza Navona. From the top of the square they walked to the right, along a zigzag route towards the Fontana di Trevi. Once there, Ray went into a small shop on the corner and bought a six pack of Peroni beers, then they sat on the steps and watched people throwing money over their shoulders into the fountain and wishing

"That worked for us then" said Dona "I was never really sure we would ever get back here but we actually made it"

"It really did work for us but not the way I intended for us to get back here though" replied Ray "I thought we would drive here in the van one day, now we can come and go as we please.  When we get home and start to plan our visits the van will be a thing of the past, I am sad about that but we should be able to go just about anywhere we want.  We will still not have much money and that will hold us back a bit but our lives will definitely change".

"Do you really thing that our lives will change" asked Dona "I wasn't thinking that it would change us that much".

"Well, I think it really will, we will just have to see how it goes" said Ray.

They sat quietly and drank their beers, as they watched all of the people wishing to come back to Rome, knowing that they could come back whenever they wanted.

----------

It was about two and a half hours after Ray and Dona disappeared and Oscar was sat watching the computer screen, he had it set to show the six separate displays from the cameras he had installed. Suddenly there was a flash on the two screens in the garden and then Ray and Dona were just stood there.  They were actually stood facing each other, with there hands well inside the backpack.

Oscar just had to have the Artifact, well not him exactly, the government or whoever it was that ran the country needed that Artifact.  It wasn't like it was actually theirs, they had only had it since sometime last week.  How was he going to get it off them though.  He started to think about how to get it off them and decided that if he could not get it, there was one last company route to go down.

For now he continued to watch them to see what they did next and when they mentioned going out for a drink to see if Oscar was about, he got changed and set off for the square.

----------

Oscar was sat outside the bar when Ray and Dona arrived and he stood up to greet them, then ordered drinks for them all.

Oscar asked what they had been up to today and Ray talked about their visit to Brouage, how they had walked the walls and how it had once been on the coast. Oscar said that they where very lucky and that he had been busy all day. Ray said that he could come out with them tomorrow if he wanted to and Dona said that it would be fun.

Oscar thought for a moment and then agreed that it might be fun, he also thought it would be a good idea to get even closer to them.  They then set about arranging were they where going and what time they were going to set off, etc.  They also drank too much again.
