Chapter Thirty

Chapter Thirty, Last Night in Bayeux

It was not too early when they set off for Bayeux but they did have plenty of time for the drive north. In fact the drive back up north was all part of their holiday.  They did stop off for something to eat along the way, they were going to stop at a small town but decided against it and just kept on the motorway for Bayeux. Many French people were doing the same thing, although they usually had wine or beer with their food. Ray and Dona were not sure about that on the motorway, perhaps the drivers didn't partake.

It took them about five and a half hours to get to the hotel, and when they arrived in Bayeux the hotel reception was not manned. They found an automated check-in machine, so used that to get their room key and unpacked what they needed for the night. After after a shower and a short rest, they set off into town.  It was getting on for five when they walked in and they did a quick sightseeing tour before finding somewhere to eat.

There was a little restaurant they had always meant to use, Le Moulin De La Galette but never got around to. As they passed it, they had a look at the menu and then went to leave intending to come back later. The guy from the restaurant came out to ask them to come in and they had to explain they would be back later.  He didn't really believe them, people must say something like that all the time. They did however return almost immediately, it had started to rain but only lightly.

Le Moulin De La Galette is close to the Cathedral just next to the water wheel and even though it was small, the food was very good, as where the drinks. Dona had a glass of white wine and Ray had a bottle of Duvel again but it was something he liked very much.  Dona even wanted afters, so Ray had to as well and the cheesecake was fantastic.  After the food they had a walk and headed in the direction of the Brasserie de l'Europe, a nice little bar they had used a few time before.

It was still fairly early but they had to be up early in the morning to catch the ferry home, so a beer or two was enough.  Dona had a Leffe and Ray had a loburg, not because he didn't want a Leffe, he had just never had a Loburg.  Luckily the Loburg Blond was not to bad at all, although he did have Leffe from then on.   Although it wasn't the usual Leffe, Ray ordered two Leffe Royale and found it a meatier version of Leffe blonde.

Just as they were finishing the beers, a band started to set up in he bar ready to play and they decided to see what they were like before they left.  Soon the band got started and they were good, Ray looked at Dona and she said that they may as well have another one, it was the last day of their holiday. The band were that good they had to have another beer and anyway they had started talking to a group of people who had asked to share their table. At first they spoke to them in French before they realised they were English as they were. They were good company and there was even free food (small snacks) being taken round the tables but they had to be up early to catch the ferry and so eventually had to go.

After the walk back, things didn't go to plan though, when hey arrived at the hotel they weren't tired at all, so Ray got some beers from the car and they watched a film on the laptop before bed.  Dona said that they could have just stayed at the bar and Ray had to agree with her.
