Chapter Twenty

Day Eight, Fish and Chips

Back in the apartment and before tea, Ray said to Dona, "you know, we really do not need to go jumping all over the place, we are already on holiday"

"I think you have a very good point there," replied Dona "we have all the time in the world to use it when we get home and I think it would be safer from our own secluded back garden.  Not to mention, we would also have much more time to plan each jump".

"But" said Ray "I really fancy proper English fish and chips, in a sit down cafe"

"And where do you think you are going to get English fish and chips in a sit down cafe around here, have you seen somewhere" asked Dona.

"No," replied Ray "I mean lets jump somewhere back home, have proper fish and chips and come straight back here"

"I get you" said Dona "but where do you want to go".

Sat eating fish, chips and mushy peas in the Magpie Cafe, in Whitby, with a couple of pieces of buttered bread and cup of tea, Ray felt quite pleased with himself as he smiled at Dona.  They had looked up Whitby on the lap top and chosen a place out of the way to jump to, then found the best address to get them there.  Its wasn't really too far to walk to get the the cafe but they still thought it best to be secluded.

"Well this saved ether of us having to go out of the way to make supper" pointed out Dona.

"No not out of the way at all" quipped Ray.

"Very good" laughed Dona "not out of the way at all"

It was about six in Whitby and it was still fairly busy, they had been lucky to get straight into the Magpie and had even made plans to move on to Trenchers Restaurant if the couldn't but there was no need for that.

"What do you want to do next?" asked Ray "we could go straight back, but the pub not not more than fifty yards away, sells Sam Smiths beers"

"Der" replied Dona "I know that.  Is that why you picked Whitby for Fish and Chips?"

"No" said Ray with a smirk on his face "there are lots of places we could have gone for Fish and Chips, where we could also get Smiths beers"

"Um" said Dona "well seeing as how we are already here, why not"

Sat in the corner of the bar, in The Jolly Sailors, Ray and Dona were enjoying a pint of Old Brewery Bitter and a half of Taddy Lager. They were both slightly worried that someone the knew would come in but they had been in here several times before and never seen a sole they knew.  It was the same as every other time they had been in there, it looked a bit rough but every one was so friendly and the beer was good.  Soon, even tough it was really fun in there, it was time for them to head back to France.

When they left The Jolly Sailors, they crossed over the swing bridge and turned first right into Grape Lane. At this time of night it was very quiet down there but they made their way to the end and turned into the car park. From the car park they jumped back to their apartment, took off their warm at home clothes and went out for another relaxing but slightly late drink.

In the main square, they met Steve, Janet and Oscar, sat outside the bar they had used last time and sat down with them. After they all had fresh drinks, Ray asked what they had all been up to today. Steve and Janet said they had had a very good day inland in Saintes, where they had seen some impressive Roman ruins.  There was also some great shops, cathedrals and a river through the middle, well worth a visit.  Ray said that it sounded like a good place to visit and Dona said that maybe they could go there tomorrow.

That last statement sounded good to Oscar.

Ray then said how they had been shopping in the morning then had been to a couple of nice places on the island, oh and how they had been accused of trying to pass forged euros.  Oscar asked if they still had the note and if so could he have a look at it.  Ray got his wallet out and gave the note to him, Oscar had a quick look and said that it was one of the new notes issued not too long ago.  He also said that he hadn't really thought that the people of France would be quite that dim, anyway there was nothing wrong with it at all.

Oscar said how he had been busy with work on the morning and then when free on the afternoon, had gone for a nice quiet walk around the town walls.  He had found the walk to be very interesting and also very relaxing.

Ray ordered more drinks and paid with the so called dodge euro note, seems that the shop in La Cotinière was a one off, or the girl was having a bad day. Anyway it was all a big of a weight of Ray's mind and something less to worry about on holiday.

The conversations went on until the bar closed, then they all made there way home.

Back in there apartment Ray said "Well I am glad that the money is good, that Oscar seems to know what he was on about.  I was a bit worried about it though."

"I know what you mean" said Dona "do you think we should go to that Saintes tomorrow, it sounded like a really nice place to visit."

"Unless we think of anything else but its Saturday tomorrow and Sunday the day after, so if we visit Saintes tomorrow we can have a rest day on the beach the day after." replied Ray "Anyway I think its time for bed now, if we are going tomorrow, I need a sleep."
