Chapter Three

Day Two, Pateley Bridge

"What the hell was that" shouted Ray in shock.
"It wasn't me" said Dona, sounding a lot calmer than she actually was. They were stood face to face with their four hands holding on to cold metal object, on a cold campsite, in Nidderdale, in Yorkshire, in England.

"What the hell are we doing here, you know where we are don't you Dona" asked Ray in a bit of a blind panic.
"Yes the Riverside Caravan Park, Pateley Bridge, Ray I'm frightened, what's happening?" said Dona letting go of the Artifact.
"I don't know" said Ray taking hold of Dona and hugging her close to him.

At that moment a lady came out of the site office and said "can I help you?" Ray was unusually quick to regain his composure and said,
"We were just wondering if you had any pitches available next week for a motorhome".
"Yes we do, do you want to book now",
"I will let you know" said Ray and took Dona by her shaking hand and led her away from the campsite, towards the town.

"I don't understand, how did we get here?" said a very worried Dona,
"like I know" said an equally worried Ray, "look its cold here, lets make for The Crown, have a warn, a beer and a think. These cloths are not suitable for Yorkshire in September, well not on a night anyway, all I do know is, it had something to do with this" he said holding the Artifact out in front of them.

"Bum" said Ray, "Bum, I only have euros, I don't think they will take euros in The Crown".
"You have your credit cards in your phone cover don't you?" asked Dona.
"You are brilliant Dona, now I know why I love you" said Ray as he flipped open his phone to check his cards.

Ray then stopped and stood staring at the phone,
"what is it" said Dona,
"look" said Ray "look at what is on the screen, its on Contacts and the contact it's open on is, Riverside Caravan Park".
"What does that mean, do you know what brought us here" asked Dona,
"no, I have no idea at all but this phone must be something to do with it, I need a beer, in fact I am starting to shake a little, I think we need a couple of beers".

After stopping off at the ATM, Ray and Dona were now warm, with a beer each, in the public bar of the The Crown Hotel, with the Artifact in a plastic carrier bag they got from the SPAR on the High Street (the SPAR bag also contained a large bag of assorted flavoured crisps, well they were on offer and you need to buy something to get a carrier). Ray was looking at his phone, hopping to make some sort of sense out of what had happened. After all, what had happened, was impossible, wasn't it.

"Do you remember that film Jumpers with Jamie Bell, you know the one who went to Northfield school same as the kids" asked Ray "the one about a ballet dancer" quipped Dona, "no the other one.  Well in the film Jumpers, he can jump like we just did and he could get money that way as well".

"What we need to do is, find a way back first, the car is in France and we don't have enough money to go and get it, we can phone the kids to come and get us here but all our stuff is in France" explained Dona.

"Lets try something, Dona hold my phone near the Spar bag and see what happens" Dona did and the phone came to life. "Have you get your phone with you?" Yes replied Dona. "Try the same thing with your phone then" She did and nothing happened, Ray was going to say that's strange but didn't bother as the whole thing was strange. "Do you have the address of our apartment Dona" Ray continued. "Again you should have their business card in your phone cover" Dona reminded him.

Ray found the card and typed the address into his phone's contacts, then said "now its dark, drink up and lets go to the park to try something".
"It's far too cold for that" said Dona, "shut up" came the reply from Ray.

In the park, behind the bowling pavilion, Ray took out his phone, opened his contacts and selected the apartment in France. He and Dona then took hold of the Artifact as they had done just over an hour before and pulled hard.

Nothing happened, they pulled again, nothing, they swapped handles and tried again, nothing, they tried all the combinations of holding the thing and nothing.

"Hang on did you put the phone number in" asked Dona, "not sure, let me check, no I didn't, hang on while I do" said Ray fumbling with the phone.   "Right it's in now, let's try again"

They took hold of the Artifact again and pulled hard, then they heard that noise, a noise like the catch on a briefcase engaging and then, a moment later, a bright soundless flash.
